The LAECESS Network: addressing the challenges of the next generation of scientists in the region

In this article, we discussed the several issues being faced by Early Career Scientists in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), from inequality problems due to the under-representation of different groups to the lack of or limited funding opportunities in the region.
Since the beginning of our network, we have been working to reduce the gap between the early careers in LAC, trying to promote research and providing information related to job opportunities, webinars, job offers and a space for discussion and collaboration.
But still, several improvements are needed to foster scientific activities and the scientific environment in LAC:
Need for a regional open-access information repository
Improvement of scientific communication
Early career involvement in the decision-making process
Improvement of research funding opportunities
Collaboration with other networks and initiatives
Increase of women’s representation in Earth science careers

Abstract
Early career (EC) Earth system scientists in the Latin America and the Caribbean region (LAC) have been facing several issues, such as limited funding opportunities, substandard scientific facilities, lack of security of tenure, and unrepresented groups equality issues. On top of this, the worsening regional environmental and climatic crises call for the need for this new generation of scientists to help to tackle these crises by increasing public awareness and research. Realizing the need to converge and step up in making a collective action to be a part of the solution, the Latin America Early Career Earth System Scientist Network (LAECESS) was created in 2016. LAECESS’s primary goals are to promote regional networking, foster integrated and interdisciplinary science, organize soft skills courses and workshops, and empower Latin American EC researchers. This article is an initial step towards letting the global science community grasp the current situation and hear the early career LAC science community’s perspectives. The paper also presents a series of future steps needed for better scientific and social development in the LAC region.
Resumen
Les científiques del sistema Tierra en etapas iniciales de la carrera de investigación (CEI) en la región de América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) se enfrentan a diversos problemas, como oportunidades de financiamiento limitadas, infraestructura científica deficiente, falta de seguridad laboral y desiguales oportunidades para grupos sub-representados. Además de esto, las crisis ambientales y climáticas regionales requieren que esta nueva generación de científiques que ayuden a abordarlas mediante contribuciones sustanciales al conocimiento público y a la investigación. Conscientes de la necesidad de converger y avanzar en acciones colectivas y propender a la búsqueda de soluciones, en 2016 se creó la Red Latinoamericana de Científiques del Sistema Tierra en las Etapas Iniciales de Carrera (LAECESS). Los objetivos principales de LAECESS son promover la creación de redes regionales, fomentar la integración y la ciencia interdisciplinaria, organizar cursos y talleres y empoderar a las investigadoras e investigadores de CEI en Latinoamérica. Este artículo es un paso inicial en dar a conocer la situación actual de ALC y las perspectivas de la comunidad CEI de esta región a la comunidad científica global. Este documento también presenta una serie de pasos futuros necesarios para un mejor desarrollo científico y social en la región.

Cientistas em início de carreira de Sistemas terrestres na região da América Latina e do Caribe (ALC) têm enfrentado diversos desafios, tais como oportunidades limitadas de financiamento, instalações científicas abaixo do padrão, insegurança empregatícia e desigualdade de representação. Além disso, o agravamento das crises ambientais e climáticas regionais exige que esta nova geração de cientistas ajude a enfrentar tais crises, aumentando a conscientização pública e a pesquisa científica. Percebendo a necessidade de convergência e fortalecimento em torno de uma ação coletiva como parte da solução, foi criada em 2016 a Rede Latino-Americana de Jovens Cientistas dos Sistemas Terrestres (LAECESS - Latin America Early Career Earth System Scientist Network). Os principais objetivos da LAECESS são promover redes regionais, fomentar a ciência integrada e interdisciplinar, organizar cursos e workshops para desenvolvimento de habilidades interpessoais, e capacitar os pesquisadores em início de carreira da América Latina. Este artigo é um passo inicial para que a comunidade científica global compreenda a situação atual e esteja ciente das perspectivas dos pesquisadores em início de carreira na ALC. O artigo também apresenta uma série de passos futuros necessários para um melhor desenvolvimento científico e social na região da ALC.
